Cherished Activites & Programs

Our cherished activities are the reason why the BPF continues to make a positive impact in the City of Burbank, helping us fund vital initiatives and elevate the vision and service of the Burbank Police Department. These include our beloved Take a Scoop Out of Crime community gathering, the spirited Bocce Tournament, and the distinguished Annual Police Awards Luncheon. We also proudly partner with local businesses and supporters by maintaining a presence at their events, while our strong commitment to youth advocacy is reflected in the Matthew Pavelka Scholarship Program. Beyond these efforts, the BPF contributes to and collaborates with numerous charities, community groups, and organizations that share our mission. To help us continue serving this beautiful city, we invite you to join us—whether through financial support or the generous donation of your time and talent.

Arrive Alive

We are committed to investing in the future leaders of our community and helping them make safe, responsible choices. In partnership with local high schools, we developed a powerful program designed to raise awareness about attentive driving and the dangers of drinking and driving. Our goal is to prevent the heartbreaking tragedies that result from these dangerous behaviors, while inspiring students to understand the lasting impact of their decisions. This impactful presentation serves as a reminder of the importance of making good choices behind the wheel and in life.

Bocce Ball Tournament

The annual Bocce Ball Tournament has become a beloved community tradition—bringing people together for a day of fun, friendly competition, and camaraderie, all in support of a meaningful cause. Players and spectators alike enjoy the lively atmosphere while knowing their participation helps fund the Matthew Pavelka Scholarship Awards Program, which provides opportunities for deserving high school seniors to pursue their educational and vocational goals. The event has gained immense support from community leaders, local businesses, and sponsors who not only contribute to its success but also share in the joy of playing for a purpose. This special tournament is a true celebration of community spirit, honoring Matt’s memory while investing in the future of Burbank’s youth.

Burbank Police Foundation Annual Awards Luncheon

The Annual Police Awards Luncheon is our signature event and the cornerstone of our mission to celebrate and support those who serve. This highly anticipated gathering brings together community members, civic leaders, and local businesses to honor the exceptional achievements of the men and women of the Burbank Police Department, as well as individuals in our community who embody the values of service, dedication, and leadership. It is a day of recognition, gratitude, and inspiration—highlighting acts of courage, commitment, and excellence that too often go unnoticed. Beyond an awards ceremony, the luncheon serves as a powerful reminder of the vital bond between our police department and the community it protects, while raising crucial support for programs and initiatives that strengthen public safety and enrich the lives of Burbank residents.

Downed Officers Program

The Downed Officers’ Program stands as one of our most meaningful and heartfelt commitments—a promise to never forget the heroes who gave everything in the line of duty. Created to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting their communities, the program provides immediate support to the families left behind. We are profoundly committed to ensuring that no family walks alone during their time of unimaginable loss, which is why we pledge $500 to the family of every fallen officer in California. This gesture, though modest compared to their sacrifice, carries with it the love, respect, and gratitude of an entire community. More than financial assistance, the program is a testament to our unwavering support for all law enforcement agencies and a reminder that the courage, service, and sacrifice of our fallen heroes will forever be remembered and honored.

Take a Scoop Out of Crime

For the past five years, our annual Take a Scoop Out of Crime event has been one of our most successful and cherished traditions—bringing the Burbank community and its police officers together over something as simple, and joyful, as a scoop of ice cream. Designed to foster trust, connection, and understanding, the event creates a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where residents of all ages can meet the men and women who protect and serve them every day. Families, youth, and community members not only share in the fun but also gain the opportunity to ask questions, engage in meaningful conversations, and learn more about the vital role our officers play in keeping Burbank safe. The smiles, laughter, and sense of unity that fill the day are a true reflection of the spirit of this city—and a reminder that building stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community is both impactful and deeply rewarding.

Matthew Pavelka Scholarship Awards Program

The Matthew Pavelka Scholarship Awards Program was established in honor of Burbank Police Officer Matthew Pavelka, who was killed in the line of duty on November 15, 2003.  Scholarships are awarded to high-school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding effort in pursuit of an educational or vocational goal.  The purpose is to motivate students to dedicate themselves more thoroughly and responsibly to their education and training, to encourage them to strive for excellence and distinction in whatever field they choose. National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which the date falls as Police Week. The National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial is located in Washington, DC and is the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Dedicated on October 15, 2001, the Memorial honors federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and protection of our nation and its people. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge in Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have given their lives. Attendees come from departments throughout the world, creating a unique opportunity to meet others who share the common bond and observe the brotherhood of Law Enforcement in action.  The Burbank Police Foundation is honored to participate in the NLEOM week by sponsoring two members of the Burbank Police Officers’ Association to attend. BDP Programs

The Burbank Police Foundation supports Burbank Police Department operations and supplements public safety initiatives. We fund needed programs, training and technology that might otherwise go unfunded.

Explorer Program

The Explorer Program is geared toward providing academic and technical training for aspiring youth. Instruction focuses on developing team-building and leadership skills, as well as the self-discipline necessary to become successful community leaders. The Explorers experience law enforcement operations through training, practical experience, competitions and other activities. By supporting The Explorer Program, you are helping to mentor and prepare future police officers and community leaders. Thank you to everyone who supports our Explorer Program!

K-9 Program

Patrol K-9’s are chosen for their drive and endurance. They have to be strong hunters, and formidable fighters for self-preservation and for the defense of their handler. K-9’s are expected to find the suspect(s), as well as any narcotics and/or paraphernalia the suspect(s) may be concealing or have discarded. K-9’s are expected to find and hold their prey, biting only when necessary and instructed. They are expected to behave in a socially acceptable manner when attending community events.  The first dog was a dual-purpose K-9, trained to find people and narcotics, and it cost the city a mere $100 to purchase. By 1986, the cost of a K-9 was approximately $5,000 each. Today, the cost to purchase a specialty K-9, such as a bomb sniffing dog, is upwards of $30,000. The Burbank Police Department currently has two K-9’s.  The Burbank Police Foundation’s Family Fun Day (formerly the annual Hoof & Woof Walk) is a fun community event, the proceeds for which benefit the K-9 and Mounted Units.  To learn more about our K-9 Program, click here.
